Now, I have now been three weeks my Oregon 400t, and I wanted to write a little guide / a review, such as geocaching works on Linux - in short, excellent!
preconditions
I first had the problem that was recognized at the Oregon via the USB port, only the internal memory and the SD card is ignored. The problem lay in the kernel configuration - I adjust my kernel and I had always tailored to
the option [*] sample all LUNs on each SCSI deviceforgotten (at Device Drivers ---> SCSI device support ). After recompiling and restarting then the micro-SD card is detected easily.
Backup
The first thing (after applying the screen protector) you should make a backup precaution of Oregon, which has - took about an hour - because of European topographic map. By:
rsync-a / media / GARMIN $ HOME / Oregonbackupis a backup to ~ / generated Oregonbackup (ggfls. adapt the paths).
Software Update
Next, I updated the firmware of the Oregon (On 3:42 Beta). Was no problem at all.
- the exe (sic) by
- unzip unzip the file gupdate.gcd to / media / Garmin / Garmin copy
- Oregon (and if necessary the SD card.) eject / unmount
- Oregon reboot Disconnect from USB and. Done.
No problem, just the corresponding GPX files (directly from GC.com on GPX eXchange file or as Pocket Query - both as a premium member only) to / media copying / Garmin / Garmin / GPX. Terra caches are unfortunately not as a geocache as a waypoint displayed but what they can also is not dramatic, because it is more usually to multis, more on that. Tracks are transferred to the same kind of Oregon - as a GPX file.
Multi Caches / Multiple waypoints
Although it is perfectly possible to manually create waypoints on the Oregon (for multi-caches, for example) is still relatively inconvenient: the touch screen is very good (I do not like to imagine how awkward that the Colorado or devices with joystick), but is relatively time-consuming, many designs capable of waypoint (see screenshots
hots).
The first - and last - that I've done manually, was at the Schwerin tour in Castrop-Rauxel: the cache had a total of 15 waypoints (including final, parking, etc.) plus waypoint for the Travelling Terra Cache "Silvio". That was a bit tiring, they create by hand, so I have a found significantly better solution: QLandkarte GT !
QLandkarte GT
QLandkarte GT is free software, it will use the maps of openstreetmap , it is also possible to integrate their own cards. Despite the relatively low version (currently I am using 0.15.1) is already well QLandkarte GT mature and can be a lot, is considered "just" and the Wegpunktmanagment Track management.
waypoints
waypoints can be created quite easily (see screenshot).
All waypoints can be - be moved as a single GPX file to the Oregon - en bloc. This went on for the next tour very quickly - the coordinates of the waypoints copy & paste it, change the name of the waypoint just the keyboard and was good - in a fraction of the time it would have taken the waypoints on the Oregon to . create It can be integrated and photos to the waypoints, the functionality I have not tried.
tracks evaluate
I myself find it always interesting where I am, hurrying so everything (except caching, either by hiking), and this is the track management of QLandkarte GT very well. The screenshots below show the track of the Schwerin tour, once on the map and once as a height profile - although the indication of the height profile is not quite as intuitive: you have a track edit the first (actually illogical) view to the height profile to be able to. Furthermore, it can create a diary to each track (in blog form) and it is stored in the Track GPX files. The tracks can be edited, of course - I had a track at some remove waypoints at the beginning, when I went with Michako to Ense - it were old waypoints in the track.
Conclusion
Geocaching on Linux with Oregon is easy and quite comfortable - for me there is no reason any Windows software (such as Mapsource or base camp) to use in VirtualBox or dual boot
